My favorite year?

Do you have a favorite year? Looking back over your life is there any particular year that stands out as one you liked the best? I recently had a birthday, my 60th, sort of a noteworthy mile marker along the road. So it got to thinking about questions like this. All in all I'm picking 1977 as my favorite year. Things were clicking along quite nicely for me that year, personally and professionally. I was very happy. 1977.

It's been awhile, but it's time for me to climb out of my hidey-hole and express myself. Let's be clear: I am NOT a John McCain supporter. I DO NOT want him anywhere near the Republican nomination. He was not ever my 1st, 2nd, or even 3rd choice to win that. All that said, he is where he is. Where is he? He's the putative GOP frontrunner, with Soooper Doooper Tuesday bearing down and he's got his closer Big Mo warming up in his bullpen. That's where he is. He may well win it. Sure looks like it right now. I just want to say that if he does get the nomination I WILL VOTE for him.

I believe that the Rush Limbaughs and Laura Ingrahams of the world --to pick out and name two-- hurt themselves and hurt their cause by their unrelenting trashing of McCain. They say he's not Ronald Reagan. No, McCain is not another Ronald Reagan. But by today's standards Reagan wasn't another Reagan either. Reagan gave us Sandra Day O'Connor. Reagan wouldn't go to the mat for Robert Bork. Illegal immigration? Hey, it was The Gipper who was the one who gave us amnesty. Reagan was the freaking architect of that concept. So I'm thinking that the whole Reagan thing is a bit overplayed by the hard right.

Besides all that, none of the Republican frontrunners in this campaign were Reagan-like. Duncan Hunter may have been. Fred Thompson may have been. But we can all see how far their candidacies went and what ultimately happened to them. We ended up with a crop of frontrunners who were all flawed one way or another.

It's Republican voters who are choosing McCain. If you want somebody else, then vote for somebody else. That's what you do. Tell us why your "X" is better than the other "Y". If you can. But enough of the vitriolic bashing.

The FBI thinks it's the same guy, so he's under arrest. His family meanwhile says no way. They say because he's a retired high school math teacher with investments worth millions, and because he's a 71 year-old man with serious and debilitating health problems, that he wouldn't rob banks, and he couldn't even if he wanted to. The pics don't seal the deal for me. I need more pics, pics other than mug shots and bank surveillance shots to decide, but as it stands right now I'm thinking I agree with the family.

I just happened to see this performance when it happened, live on Hullabaloo many many eves ago, back in September of 1965, September 20th, 1965 to be precise (I remembered that it was not long after school began that year, and that Jerry Lewis and Gary Lewis were the hosts of that particular episode. The TV.com episode guide helped me out with the rest).

Without opining one way or another about the politics that may underlie it, it's a pretty powerful performance, gotta say. Thought so then, and still think so 42 years worth of eves later.

The Zebster launches...

I used to blog. I stopped. But now I'm back.

That was under a different name. This is under The Zebster, as you can see. I like the name The Zebster better than my old name.

It was about a year ago that I stopped blogging. I stopped for numerous reasons. The usual ones bloggers stop, and some others too.

We'll just have to see how it goes.
